In the Beginning............

In the Beginning, from Genesis 1:26 -

26Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." God created man in His own image. He created him; male and female. He created them. 28God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth."…

Then Man sinned and in Genesis 6:3-

Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years."

Fast forwarding from Genesis, as Man evolved over the years, his lifespan was much less than 120 years but during the "caveman" days, he lived a lifespan of about 25-30 years which continued to into the Bronze and Iron age. This lifespan from birth didn't change much until 1850 when the average lifespan from birth was 30-35. Some members of aristocracy lived decades longer but the general population was stuck at 30-35 years according to various sources.

In the US, the lifespan was 35 in 1800, and 36 in 1850. Between 1850 and 1900 Lister's cleanliness techniques reduced the deaths due to infection. Vaccines against Rabies, Cholera, Typhoid fever and Anthrax were developed. Pasteur and Koch developed the germ theory.

In 1900, the average lifespan in the US increased to 47.3 (CDC data) and the top 5 causes of death were: Flu and Pneumonia; Tuberculosis; Gastrointestinal infections; Heart disease and Cerebrovascular disease (Strokes). Between 1900 and 1950, hospitals were created and expanded throughout the U.S., Insulin was used for Diabetes, vaccines were developed for Whooping Cough, Diphtheria, Cholera, Tuberculosis, Yellow fever,Tetanus and Polio (1955). Penicillin was discovered and the first vaccine for Flu developed. The impact of the vaccines was huge and the average lifespan increased to 68.2 (CDC data) by 1950. Women live about 5 years longer than men.

In 1950 (CDC data), the top 5 causes of death were Heart disease, Cancer, Strokes, non car accidents, infant deaths. Former top 5 killers-Flu/Pneumonia and Tuberculosis were reduced by vaccination. For the first time in history, we pasted the halfway mark in the 120 year lifespan.

Sixty five years later, in 2015, the average lifespan in the US has increased 10 years to 79 years. Between 1950 and 1990, Medicine developed the following vaccines- Measles, Mumps , Chicken pox, Rubella, Pneumonia, Hepatitis A and B and our lifespan increased to 75.

Meanwhile in that same time frame, we have created a Health Care system, health insurance and Big Pharma (in the 1990s Big Pharma started blasted out hundreds of drugs like statins, cancer treatments etc., but between 1950 and 2105 we had no Medical breakthroughs outside of the vaccines.

In 2015, (CDC data) the top 5 causes of death are: Heart Disease, Cancer, deaths caused by Hospital mistakes (recent John's Hopkins study upgrades this cause from #4 to #3), COPD, Stroke and #6....Alzheimer's (projected to be at least #4 due to not identifying proper cause of death-future blog).

While we have increased our lifespan to 79 years, the rate of rate of increase of our lifespan has significantly slowed down in last 65 years similar to the rates of the mid 19th century. Why did our lifespan just drop for first time in 22 years?
